Window Wear came to be as a result of The Cozy Home and it's two principals: Melody Foster and Gayle Thomas. Melody and Gayle have worked together for over 10 years in The Cozy Home, which is an interior design firm that specialized in window treatments. Melody and Gayle have always sought to make interior design affordable for the average American family, and have always offered services and products that were typically 25% to 30% below their competitors' prices.

Over the years, Melody and Gayle have found numerous way to save money for their clients and have developed a variety of product offerings that were tailored to the budget-conscious consumer. But, as the Recession loomed, they were even more motivated to find new and more vigorous ways to make custom window treatments affordable to more and more households.

Melody and Gayle were also frustrated by the limited selection, poor quality and the boring styles and fabrics that were available in retail stores. In general, there were no good options for window treatments for their clients that could not afford custom, yet wanted to have beautiful windows.

As a result, they were driven to find a solution to beautiful window treatments that were affordable, with high-quality construction, designer fabrics, could be adjusted to fit a variety of window sizes, and could be customized to meet the design style and colors of virtually any home -- a daunting list of requirement, to be sure!

The initial drawing and discussion took place in a coffee shop using a napkin for a drawing board in October 2010. Since then, there have been numerous proto-types, problems and challenges, and many a sleepless night to bring Window Wear to the marketplace.

Window Treatments: The Differences in Cost, Options and Styles

The wide variety of window treatments available in today’s marketplace can

create a confusing and overwhelming frustration. Which style to choose? How much is

too much to spend? How can I cover this odd-shaped window? How can I control the

damaging sun?

There are several basic options to choosing window treatments, and in this

article we are going to deal only with fabric solutions. We will leave blinds, shutters and

shades for another time.

We will start with the most basic options -- off-the-rack at retail stores, like Target

or KMart. This option is probably the least expensive and offers a basic selection of

valances and drapery panels. The advantage of this option is the lowest cost and the

instant convenience of take it home and install it tonight. The disadvantages of this

option are limited selection, sizes, styles and colors. This is a good option to choose

when your budget is limited and/or you are decorating non-public spaces, like bedrooms

or laundry rooms.

The next level of options is premium retail or specialty internet stores, like Pottery

Barn or Window Wear. This option gives you a wider selection for size, color/pattern

and styles. You will find a wide array of style choices, especially in valances when

searching internet-based stores. Drapery panels will be available in a wider range of

sizes, but will still be limited to standard measurements: 63”, 84”, 96” or 120”. You can

readily find rod-pocket, grommet or ring-top hanging options in this category. The

disadvantages of this option are in limitations of size for oversized and wider windows,

styles to accent unusual shape windows, paying for shipping/handling and waiting for

the item to arrive. This is a good option for more public spaces that have standard size

windows, like family rooms, lower levels, and kitchens.

Another option is in semi-custom manufacturers, like Smith & Noble. This option

allows you to choose from a pre-set selection of fabrics and order specifically to fit the

exact measurements of your windows. This option is a bit pricier, but you get exact

sizing for your needs. The disadvantages here besides a higher price point, include a

still limited fabric selection, paying for shipping/handling and waiting for manufacturing

and shipping times, which can range up to 21 days. This is a good option for unusual

size windows or public rooms where you want a higher-quality look and style.

The final option you have available is full custom window treatments using an

interior designer. This option offers you a virtually unlimited range of styles, fabrics,

colors, sizes and overall solutions -- anything is possible. A good interior designer will

help you narrow these options down and present solutions that meet your wants and

needs, as well as your budget. The disadvantages of this option are price and wait

time. Obviously, this is the most expensive option available and the entire process will

typically require 4 to 8 weeks. This option is ideal for public spaces like living, dining or

family rooms or master bedrooms, hard-to-cover windows, or where you need more

functionality than you can get off-the-shelf.

better able to assess your needs and budget to select the best window treatments for

every room in your home!

What is the real value of window treatments in the home? Why do people spend

so much money decorating their windows? Why add anything beyond blinds or

The obvious answer is beauty, but there is so much more “behind the curtain”, so

As creatures of nature, we are undeniably linked to beauty, and need beauty in

natural beauties, and pursue outdoor activities. All of these things are pursuits of

beauty and appreciating the things we find beautiful.

Window treatments give us the opportunity to add beauty to our homes in ways

that are different than other decorations. Most decorating in the home is focused below

eye-level. Flooring, furniture, accessories, pillows -- they all are generally below eye-

level in the room. Artwork, paint and windows are at or above eye level and are the

primary ways in which we can add beauty above and draw the eye upwards to

showcase vaulting ceilings and dramatic window views.

One of the reasons homeowners give for not adding window treatments is they

“don’t want to interfere with the beautiful views from the window”. The idea behind

window treatments in this case should be to frame the view, just like you frame artwork.

Most of the time, artwork is highlighted and accented by a great frame and looks better

because of the framing. Windows with artful views, should be framed for the same

reason -- they will look better.

Another reason we hear that prevents homeowners from adding window

treatments is cost. However, with the wide variety of options available in today’s

marketplace, this should not be an obstacle. A room is not complete without window

treatments, and finding the right treatment at an affordable price is always an option. If

you are not able to find a solution on your own, bringing in an interior designer will help.

The designer may cost a small hourly fee (starting as low as $35), but they have

resources and knowledge that will far outweigh the small hourly fee.

Window treatments are an opportunity to express your personality, as well.

Window treatments can say you are whimsical and fun, or conservative and traditional.

They are a form of artwork that surrounds a window and adds color, texture and warmth

to a room. You’ll also find that they will reduce noise and echoes within the room,

making it more comfortable and inviting.

Window treatments also add value to the real estate aspect of your home.

Homes with window treatments show better to prospective buyers and sell faster than

homes without treatments.

We spend so much time, energy and money in creating the perfect home and

window treatments are an integral component of the overall beauty of a home.

Most homeowners realize the added benefit and beauty that window valances add to their home. Not only do they add warmth, color and texture to a room, they hide the ugly raised blinds.

However, valances are very versatile, too, and can be used in many different ways to accent other areas than just windows.

One popular alternative use for valances is in the bathroom over the tub enclosure or shower curtain. They really give a finished look to the bathroom when hung over the shower curtain to hide the rod and rings. With a glass enclosure with sliding doors, hanging valances adds color and warmth to the room, while helping to minimize the echoey nature of all those hard surfaces.

With our higher ceilings and open floor plans, sometimes it can be difficult to help define spaces and make them more intimate without closing them off. Using valances hung at ceiling height can help to define a space and make a cozy dining area or conversation nook.

When hanging drapery panels in doorways, use valances to add extra color and texture. Using a double-sided panel and valance on either side gives you a finished look from both rooms. You can create your own double-sided panel by using clip rings to clip two drapery panels back-to-back. The panels can be either matching or different, depending on the look you want from either room. This style looks particularly good in 9’ doorways.

You can also create a custom bedskirt by using velcro or iron-on seam tape to attach valances to a bedskirt. Most valances have a 16” drop, so they work really well on today’s higher beds.

There are even magnetic valances that can be accessorized to fit your style. They incorporate sheet metal into the valance and magnets into the accessories to you can mix and match accessories, layer pieces over each other, and change the look quickly and easily.
